Dislocation is the complete separation of bones in a joint, while subluxation is a partial or incomplete dislocation where joint surfaces still touch.  Both cause pain, swelling, and reduced function.  The laxity of tendons and ligaments due to connective tissue disorders can contribute to these occurrences.
